INSLEY, Albert Babb (American 1842-1937): “Briar Neck, Cape Ann Massachusetts” oil on canvas 9 inches high by 16 inches wide, 13 inches high by 20 inches wide by 1 1/8 inch deep frame, signed lower left Albert Insley and titled lower left edge on canvas under frame. Gilt post war frame with linen liner.
NOTE: this painting is accompanied by an Albert Insley Registration form complied by Roy Blankenship. Authentication, appraisal, provenance, condition report, registration number 069 with an annotation that copies of the registration form have been submitted to the Smithsonian Institute and Frick Museum Library.
Provenance: the artist upon the time of his death 1937, the artist’s daughter until 1967, Roy Blankenship (the artist’s great grandson) until 1982, Jane Colgan, Christmas 1982.
Wax lined on replacement stretchers in 1972 by Roy Blankenship, an AIC Fellow. Painting does not appear to be varnished. Fine painterly impasto with unpainted areas of canvas throughout. No noticeable craquelure. Moderate light wave to canvas. Mat board strip has been applied over title on edge of canvas for protection with original title inscription repeated on top of strip (see detailed image).
