Antique 30" Carved Painted Folk Art Ship's Figurehead Type or Architectural Woman Holding Flowers or a Floral Wreath Fully Modeled Wooden Sculpture Classical Statue in the Neo-Classical, Greek or Roman Manner from Important Estate Fitted as a Garden Planter Urn in the 20th Century
Measures 50" high including later basket vase top with copper, brass or bronze urn insert and plinth pedestal.
Exceptional detail, no visible signature.
Unknown if American such as from New York or Boston or Continental European such as English, French, German or Italian but many of the items in the estate were 19th century American and French.
As discovered from the estate, turned section above head, wire planter and urn insert are later additions as is dowel into top of head. Brown painted base is also added. Paint to figure has age however there is a visible undercoat and we do not know if both or either are original but the current worn patina is most attractive, some patina wear to wood at high relief points, various separations in wood commensurate with age, several chips and cracks to the figure at its base as illustrated, basket has oxidized and urn insert that may be copper, brass or bronze has very heavy interior verdigris and or oxidation with pitting and holes, added painted base has heavy paint wear in areas.
