Roy Lichtenstein (American, 1923-1997). "Sweet Dreams Baby! [original print]". Color silkscreen. 1965. Signed in pencil, lower right; numbered in pencil, lower left. The edition was 200 with 50 proofs numbered in roman numerals; our example is print # XXX. White wove paper. Very wide, almost full, margins. Fine impression with bright, vibrant colors; no fading. Fine condition; no evident tears, scuffs, holes, foxing. From the '11 Pop Artists' portfolio, volume III. "Lichtenstein acknowledged the three works he produced for the '11 Pop Artists' portfolios as his 'First true Pop Art prints' (see Corlett, pg.21), and 'Sweet Dreams Baby!' is quite rightly regarded as one of his graphic masterworks. It is one of the first works to display his signature ben-day dots and appropriated comic-book style. Interestingly it is also one of only four prints, and interestingly from the 1960's, that he produced containing a speech bubble, a device which was far more widely seen in his paintings of that time."
