NEWELL, George Glenn, N.A. (American, 1870-1947): Cattle in a Summer Landscape, an Impressionist Plein Air Oil Sketch with Two Cows Lying Down, oil on canvas, 7" high x 9 1/2" wide overall canvas dimensions, signed lower left G. Glenn Newell, inscribed "Woburn, Mass." on reverse. Matted in contemporary gilt frame. Provenance: Central Florida collection.

About the artist:
Newell, a painter of cattle and pastoral landscapes, was born in Berrien County, Michigan in 1870. He became a student of Edgar Melville Ward (1849-1915) at the National Academy of Design, after graduating from Albion College in Michigan and Columbia University. Newell also studied under Will S. Robinson and F. E. Courter at the Teacher’s College of New York. Newell himself became a National Academician in 1937, won several awards, and exhibited at the National Academy regularly between 1901 and 1944. In addition, Newell was president of Allied Artists of America and a member of New York’s Grand Central Art Galleries...(excerpted from a Richard H. This work is painted on canvas trimmed on one side however we believe this was the original size of this plein air sketch, work is mounted with framing tape to later matboard and is not affixed to front later mat, no visible craquelure, mellowed varnish, nice impasto, frame good.
