He began his career as a surgeon in WWII. While being held in a Texas prisoner of war camp, he began using his surgical skills and developing them into artistic expressions, by sewing things together. The horrors of war influenced his art, as well as industrial waste of the mid 20th century. Burri was recognized as a seminal figure in Italian modern art, sometimes contemporary, and sometimes nihilistic in form. His work was featured amongst post-war Italian art at the Guggenheim Museum. His art is considered significant in modern art, and it can be found in public and private collections around the world. *
