O/C 'Garrison Landing' looking toward West Point. Also depicted are the Steamship 'Henry Clay' plying the river Northbound and the sloop 'Mary' waiting to be loaded at the dock. A bucolic scene created in either 1851 or 1852 as the 'Henry Clay' launched on the water in the seasons 1851 and 1852 and burned with the loss of 80 or so passengers on July 28, 1852. Goupil & Co., 289 Broadway, NY address stamp, on the verso of the canvas, also confirms the date of 1851 or1852. Presented in the original gilded frame in the original finish with minor losses. A recently published book 'Death Passage on the Hudson, the Wreck of the Henry Clay' by Kris Hansen details the events and outrage of the race between the 'Henry Clay' and the 'Armenia' and the resulting indictments of the owners and crew. Depictions of Garrison Landing are few and the Henry Clay even fewer.
