Model 1850 Ames sword engraved on the blade oval 'Ames, Ma.' Ames Manufacturing Company Militia Officer's sword. This sword boasts a gilt Knight's Helmet pommel with double chain guard attached along with carved bone grips. The cruciform guard seem to be all different on these models this has a single star ( Texas ?) as the central feature. The oval cross-section blade is double edged with a small center fuller running 11.5 inches. The super etched blade on the frost background has acorns & oak leaves, a stand of American flags with a Liberty cap and the reverse has similar foliate with a stand of arms, an American eagle with E. Pluribus Unum and sun rays. The gilt brass scabbard double top rings and a single middle ring. The drag is of the shoe type. The scabbard is engraved with designs and stamped on the reverse Ames Mfg. Co., Chicopee, Mass. Another M1850 presentation piece was engrave dated 1847 and used in the Mexican War. Size: L. O. A. 38" Blade L. 31", W. 5 3/4" Weight: 2.55lbs
