Description

Military saber/sword etched on the ricasso Jacob Reed's Sons, Phila. PA.. Has etched decoration centering on U. S. and opposite side centering an eagle with the words E Pluribus Unum. Slight curvature to blade. Grip is leather and wire wrapped with brass hilt. Scabbard is brushed steel with brass bolsters, rings and drag. PROVENANCE: Dr. James E. Connor ,1939-1994- Ford White House, secy. to the cabinet, administrator to the President. Size: In scabbard L. 37.25" Blade L. is 30" Weight: 2.2 pounds************************************************************* Jacob Reed�s Sons Company was founded in 1824 by Jacob Reed. By the late 19th century, a bevy of Reed men owned or were working at the firm. In 1887, the city directory listed Alan H. Reed, Edward H. Reed, and George K. Reed as comprising the management of the company. Four years later only Alan and George remained in the directory notice. They also had a men's clothing store which finally went out of business in 1983. Jacob Reed�s Sons was among the manufacturers selected by the Post Office Department to make uniforms for its city carriers.
