Elbridge Ayer Burbank, American 1858-1949. A turn of the century oil on canvas portrait of a Native American entitled "BE-TOW-WAK-SHAY-BE-GIE, NAVAJO" depicted in a 1st Phase Navajo Chief's blanket, wearing a Squash Blossom necklace. Annotated upper left and signed "E. A. Burbank, Ganado, Ariz" lower left. (Burbank met and became the lifelong friend of Juan Lorenzo Hubbel, called "The Old Mexican" by the Navajo, at Hubbel's trading post in Ganado, AZ in 1897). Slight surface wear, canvas cleaned and lined. In the original frame with painted detail and leather corner straps. Image 8 1/4 x 12 1/2", framed 16 x 20 1/4" overall. ESTIMATE $4,000-6,000
