Description
Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 81 x 74 5/8 in./205.7 x 189.5 cm The Sutro Baths was an extravagant venture of the German immigrant and self-made millionaire, Adolphe Sutro. On the Point Lobos peninsula at the western end of San Francisco, he built this opulent rococo palace in 1896. It contained seven different swimming pools (one fresh water, six salt water with a variety of temperatures), 517 changing rooms, and could accommodate a whopping 7,400 bathers. This rare billboard gives the viewer a panoramic view of this unusual establishment and does so with an abundance of detail and charm. In addition to the watery delights of the Sutro Baths, the establishment also housed a museum of artifacts that Sutro had accumulated during his extensive travels, a concert hall, and, for a period of time, an ice skating rink. An inglorious end came to the glorious structure when in 1966 it was destroyed by a fire and abandoned.
