A very nice ivory allegorical cane. The elephant ivory handle is 3 1/2" high and 1 1/8" in diameter. It is carved with human symbols that appear to be allegorical to England during the Empire's expansion. The top is fashioned as a winged angel face on a tasseled pillow, a strong symbol of Christian benevolence. Going around the sides there is a woman holding an anchor and a parrot that suggests England as "Mistress of the Seas". The next image is a woman holding a cross that suggests England spreading the Christian word through missionaries. The final image is a woman lovingly caring for three naked children that suggests England's bringing civilization and culture to the "great unwashed". There is a 1" decorated silver collar on a black shaft with a 1 1/2" bimetal ferrule. The overall length is 37 1/2" and the condition is very good with an insignificant cosmetically in-filled crack at the base of the handle, a small bit chipped from the cross, and the figures somewhat worn down from years of handling. It is probably English, ca 1860 and it is a very interesting example, very nicely fashioned. Estimate: $1200-$1800
