A fine ivory, abalone, and island wood nautical cane. Fashioned from a single tooth, the whale ivory octagon knob is 1 3/4" high and 1 1/8" in diameter. It is inlaid on top with a 2/3" round abalone disc set in a raised ivory ring. The shaft is hand turned island wood with whale ivory bar eyelets, and abalone diamonds inlaid as decorative highlights. A 1/3" short brass flared ferrule completes the piece. The overall length is 33" and the condition is very good, with lots of natural defects present in the carved whale ivory tooth handle. (Scrimshanders call these natural defects "pearls", because they mostly appear round.) It is perhaps from America's Pacific, ca 1860, and it is probably sailor made. Estimate: $1000-$1500
