A great silver skull memento mori cane with jewels. The silver handle is 3" high and 1 1/2" at its widest point. It depicts a skull with a royal crown that has a 3/4" faceted citrine in a bezel on top and seven small faceted emeralds around its sides. Bone hands are at the skulls cheeks in a pondering pose. (Memento mori is a term that describes a genre of Christian art that reflected a central theme: we are all mortal and will all someday lose our flesh and return to dust after death, in this case, even kings). The base of the handle is stamped "Sterling". The shaft is heavy ebony that is carved octagonally for its entire length and ends with a 1 1/2" brass and iron ferrule. The overall length is 36 1/4" and the condition is very good. It is perhaps Continental, ca 1880, and may have been exported to America. It is a very nice, unusual example of the type. Estimate: $1500-$2500
