Description
A scarce Remington small dog gun cane curio. The half crook gutta percha handle is about 3" long. It depicts the head of a hound dog. There is a 1/4" lined nickel collar on a gutta percha veneered shaft. The piece unscrews four and one-half inches down the shaft in order to insert a 22 caliber rim-fire cartridge. The gun is cocked by a straight pull that allows a notched sight to pop up for aiming. A round trigger below the collar fires the piece and all mechanics are working. The gutta percha veneer is intact with some evidence of professional repairing of it. Any Remington marks in the gutta percha. have long since worn away, a common occurrence in these pieces. It terminates with a 1 1/4" hollow steel ferrule that has a raised metal nib to assist in aiming. The overall length is 35 1/4" and the general condition is very good. It is ca 1870 and it is a great example of the type. The small dog heads were sometimes referred to as a lady's gun canes and not as many were made as the larger dog model, making them even scarcer today. Estimate: $8000-$10,000
