Signed and inscribed "Aston Knight Paris" l.l., titled and inscribed "...To Victoria
Bates/c/o J.S. Frelinghuysen/111 William St. NY" on a label affixed to the strainer, inscribed "...Twilight on the Grand Canal" in pencil on the strainer and with a Paris export stamp affixed to the reverse.
Oil on canvas, 25 1/2 x 32 in. (64.8 x 81.3 cm), framed.
Condition: Craquelure, surface grime.
Provenance: From the artist to his niece, Victoria (née Frelinghuysen) Bates (1907-2002); by family descent to the present owners.
Condition: Craquelure overall. Small paint loss l.r. at bottom edge, measuring 1/8 inch. Paper label affixed to the reverse appears to be an old customs stamp with faded lettering, not a patch reinforcement.
