This club has an oval to a spined ridge sectioned shape handle, with a flat butt end with a thong suspension hole. The sweeping handle ends with a lizard effigy (under water serpent) on top of the clubs ball head. The lizard has two front legs over the front of the ball extending 1 inch. The lizards mouth is slightly open and its carved tongue is visible. This Mohican practical use club has an essence of power when held. It is 20.75 inches o/a with a 3.5 inches long ball x 3 inches wide. Nice aged uniform worn patina. 18th to early 19th century. The club is from the southern end of Lake Champlain and the Hudson River area. This clubs lizard or salamander effigy gave it powerful medicine to its owner. The N.E. Indians Great Spiritual Power comes from the Manitou, or underwater serpent, that has many helpers of which the lizards and salamanders are included. Shows an excellent overall patina.
