Description

An early 20th century platinum, diamond and emerald swallowtail butterfly brooch, mounted en tremblant. Of openwork design, the circular and old-cut diamond body, to the vari-cut diamond wings, with single-cut diamond antenna and circular-shape emerald eye accent. Estimated total diamond weight 6.35cts, I-J colour, SI clarity. Length 5.7cms. Weight 16.8gms. With fitted case.

Condition

The lot is in good overall condition with scratches and small dents in keeping with general wear. There are small areas of discolouration to the mount. The diamonds appear bright and moderately well matched, some appear slightly better in colour grade, some potentially slightly worse in clarity grade, with scattered dark inclusions and some light feathers. Setting prevents accurate assessment of some diamonds. Some diamonds too small to accurately assess colour/clarity grades. Please see important notices for purchasers in the catalogue for Coloured Gemstones. The emeralds appear vibrant bluish green with typical inclusions including small surface reaching cavities. Unhallmarked. The box has dark staining to the silk, stamped for Bright & Sons, Scarborough. The outside of the case is scuffed and worn.
