RARE EARLY BENNINGTON COVERED JAR. Urn s

RARE EARLY BENNINGTON COVERED JAR. Urn shaped with raised rings, round stepped base and a conical lid. An inked note on the base "Fort Ticonderoga 1810 used as a sugar bowl". An almost identical base is pictured in Plate 2 of Bennington Pottery and Porcelain by Barrett. The piece is listed as one of the earliest pieces (ca 1795 - 1800) made by Captain John Norton, who founded the first pottery in Bennington in 1793. Medium brown slip glaze resembling Albany glaze. Faint rim hairline. 10 3/4"h.
