Reverend Albert Wagner
(1924 - 2006)
The Man from Cyrene,
Mixed media including acrylic paint, ink, oil stick, and graphite on beaver board,
Unsigned.
Interpretation: According to the Synoptic Gospels, among the crowd gathered at Christ's crucifixion there was an African man named Simon who came from Cyrene, or modern-day Libya. Simon was compelled by the Romans to carry His cross when Jesus could bear it no longer. Albert believed that the African people had been chosen by God to share Christ's burden, a notion symbolized explicitly by this story. - Bonita Wagner Johnson
