A CLEVER QUEEN ANNE STYLE MAHOGANY MECHANICAL CHAIR WITH ANTIQUE TAPESTRY
England, 19th Century
The English metamorphic chair was inspired by French Regence counterparts, created for the Bourgeoisie and a French Court obsessed with ""Les Muebles de suprises"" or, dual purpose furniture, and was embraced by the English manor houses as a way to accommodate guest, nannies and nurses. Officers, eager to bring the comforts of home into battle, needed dual purpose furniture and continued this desire upon their return. In fact, this ""Campaign"" style or ""Mechanical"" furniture was of such quality and style the Campbell Brothers began patenting several designs in the 1840's.
