Description
Fossils and RelatedRare Bearpaw Ammonite.
Rare Bearpaw Ammonite from the Bearpaw Formation, Canada.
Beautiful 10” Bearpaw Ammonite, Placenticeras Intercalare, from the Black Bearpaw Shales of Southern Alberta, Canada, 110 to 65 million years old. This type of ammonite is highly prized by collectors. They are larger than most species found and have a highly complex fractal suture pattern where the chamber walls expand from a one-dimensional form to become a two-dimensional shell covering. Due to size and physical limitations, they cannot be excavated by mechanized methods, but must be recovered by hand. The mother-of-pearl shell has been transformed into a precious gem called Ammolite. This specimen has been restored, as almost all ammonites of this type have. It has minor cracks that have been professionally repaired. Also has some calcification on one side. This is a partial specimen, but still retains a large amount of light reflecting shell. The curve is still appearant. This Bearpaw has a base color of deep red that changes to green and gold as the light angle changes. We have located a website where specimens of this size retail for $3000 to $5000 each.
