Description
Fossils and RelatedExtinct Relative of the Piranha.
Extremely Large Fossil of a Phareodus.
This extremely large, 12.5” x 6”, Phareodus was an ancient ancestor of the modern day Piranha. This is readily apparent when you examine its mouth full of sharp pointed teeth. This spectacular museum quality specimen is 50 million years old and was found in the Green River Formation in Wyoming. The detail on this fossil is truly amazing, including tiny fin bones, needle-like teeth, and brown body scales. The contrast between the chocolate colored bones and beige limestone matrix is stunning. Impressive to look at as a whole, it is even more fascinating to use a magnifying glass. Well centered on its 13.5” x 10” matrix, this could be easily mounted and displayed as the “one that got away”.
