1640, “TABULA ITALIAE, CORSICAE, SARDINIAE...,” by Jan Jansson, Amsterdam, Choice Very Fine.
18” x 21.25”, copperplate engraving, handcolored in outline, with a fabulous, wide border featuring small, handcolored vignettes of various Italian cities and styles of dress worn by the noble classes which ruled them. This is a magnificent piece for any discerning collector. Beautifully handcolored, with nice illustrations and extensive locations written in Latin. Spaced evenly throughout the border are eight coats of arms belonging to some of the regions depicted on the map (Corsicae, Sardiniae, Venetae, Romani, Neapolitani, Hispaniae, Florentia and Genuense.) There is also an ornate compass rose near the bottom right, along with sea creatures and sailing ships. The map does have a small vertical tear at the upper right edge and some mild foxing around the border, but neither detracts from the overall presentation. Truly a wonderful find.
