A Map of North America by John Blair
Description
Maps“A Map of North America” by John Blair, 1794--Identifying Indian Nations !
1794, “A MAP OF NORTH AMERICA FROM THE LATEST SURVEYS AND MAPS,” by John Blair, Engraved by Thomas Kitchin, Choice Extremely Fine.
18” x 23.25”, uncolored copper-engraved map. Just a hint of faint tone down the center. Significant map of the eastern two-thirds of North America, but excluding the northern reaches of Canada and the tip of Florida. Everything east of Mississippi is firmly British, and the southern colonies extend as far as that river, with their speculative borders stretching on into the plains. Many Indian nations are designated (Sioux, Kansez, Osage, Assiniboel, etc.) and there is even notice of Indians who were exterminated or relocated; there are four apocryphal islands in Lake Superior, much of Missouri is shown but “the Source unknown,” and many other interesting features. A map rich in detail and novelty. First published in 1768, with several later editions; the present copy is on Whatman paper watermarked 1794. A bit darkened along the centerfold; near fine.
