Hardbound cloth, 9” x 6”, 339 pages, containing 36 tinted lithograph plates illustrating the inhabitants, villages, river, mountain, jungle and village scenes from a South American expedition sponsored by the Navy Department. Volume II only, absent the first volume. Herndon and Gibbon were lieutenants in the Navy, and Gibbon was the cartographer who recorded their voyage up the Amazon River. There is a gift inscription from 1969 on the front inside cover. Original black cloth is still present, with back strip separated. Pages are slightly toned, with normal wear. Fabulous lithographs!
