NICHOLAS II: (1868-1918) Emperor of Russia 1894-1917. An exceptionally fine signed sepia 5 x 7.5 photograph, the image depicting the Tsar in a formal head and shoulders study wearing a uniform and medals. Signed ('Nicky') and dated 1898 in his hand to a clear area in the upper left corner of the image. Professionally matted in gold and burgundy and framed and glazed in a gold coloured frame to an overall size of 15 x 18. A wonderful signed portrait, presented by Nicholas to his sister and featuring a rare example of the Tsar's signature using his family name. Some extremely minor, very light staining to the lower edge of the image, otherwise EX £2500-3500
Provenance: The photograph is from the personal collection of Her Imperial Highness Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna (1882-1960) Grand Duchess of Russia, daughter of Emperor Alexander III. Sister of Tsar Nicholas II.
The photograph later formed part of the Byington Collection, acknowledged in Tsar: The Lost World of Nicholas and Alexandra by Peter Kurth (p.223) and Olga Romanov: Russia's Last Grand Duchess by Patricia Phenix (p.296)
NICOLÁS II (1868-1918) Emperador de Rusia 1894-1917. Una excepcional fotografía de época, en sepia, de 12´5 x 19 cm, firmada por el zar. La imagen muestra a Nicolás II en un retrato de estudio, con uniforme y medallas. Firmado con total nitidez ('Nicky') y con fecha de 1898 de su mano sobre un área despejada en la esquina superior izquierda de la imagen. Profesionalmente enmarcado en color oro y burdeos y con marco exterior de color oro, con cristal, para un tamaño total de 38 x 45´5 cm. Un maravilloso retrato firmado, regalo de Nicolás a su hermana, con un rarísimo y magnífico ejemplo de la firma del zar usando su nombre. Algunas muy ligeras y pequeñísimas manchas en la parte inferior en el borde la imagen, en cualquier caso EX.
Procedencia: La foto es de la colección personal de Su Alteza Imperial la Gran Duquesa Olga Alexandrovna (1882-1960) Gran Duquesa de Rusia, hija del emperador Alejandro III. Hermana del zar Nicolás II.
La fotografía más tarde formó parte de la reconocida colección Byington sobre el zar: El mundo perdido de Nicolás y Alexandra por Peter Kurth (p.223) y Olga Romanov: última Gran Duquesa de Rusia por Patricia Phenix (p. 296)
