AN UNUSUALLY LARGE SALT GLAZED STONEWARE BELLARMINE JUG (RHENISH WARE), 17TH CENTURY, the neck embellished with a bearded face or mask, a caricature of Cardinal Bellamino, the Roman Catholic theologian and very active leader in the Counter Reformation during the time of religious upheaval and schism and thus very unpopular with Protestants. The bearded pot bellied jugs were German in origin but were widely dispersed throughout Britain and Western Europe, this large example being from an English collection. Height: 15"
