Zhertvuite! [Donate!], a poster by Konstantin Korovin (1861-1939). Published by the Moscow Section of the All-Russian Zemstvo Union for Helping the Sick and Wounded, Moscow, 1914. 120.5 x 90 cm.
This is one of the best known Russian charity posters of the WWI period, produced by a major Russian artist. By introducing the archetypal image of the legendary Russian warrior, Duke Dmitry Donskoi of Moscow, whose 1380 Kulikovo Field victory over the Golden Horde army sowed the seeds of Russia’s independence, Korovin presents participation in the charity drive as the patriotic duty of the Muscovites. The juxtaposition of the 1380 and 1914 dates further reinforces the urgency of Korovin’s appeal.
