Narodovlastiye v drevnei Rossii [Democracy in Ancient Russia], a poster likely by Alexander Apsit (1880-1944). Published by VTsIK Publishing, Moscow, 1918. 53.5 x 35 cm.
This unsigned poster was likely produced by Alexander Apsit (1880-1944). Stylistically, it is quite similar to other posters in the ”Forefathers of the Russian Revolution” series, like Stepan Razin and Emel’yan Pugachev, known to be produced by the artist.
Apsit, ”the father of Bolshevik poster,” produced a large number of posters for the Soviet government before leaving Russia for his native Latvia. He is credited with developing many distinct Soviet symbols, including the Hammer and Sickle and the Red Star.
