Sovetskaya repka [The Soviet Turnip], a poster by Dmitry Moor (Dmitry Orlov, 1883-1946, Meritorious Art Worker of the Soviet Union). Published by LitIzdat PUR, Moscow, 1920. 71 x 52 cm.
In an old Russian fable, a determined peasant trying to pull out a huge turnip keeps bringing more and more helpers, and finally succeeds. Moor turns the story upside down - in his version, the Red Army successfully defeats the growing number of its determined enemies. This lubok-style poster, with its easily memorized rhymed captions, became very popular, and was considered one of Moor’s best works of the period.
