Pochemu nachalas’ grazhdanskaya voina? [What Were the Causes of the Civil War?], a photomontage poster by an anonymous artist. Published by GIZ, Moscow, c. 1925. 100 x 70.5 cm.
There was a period in the beginning of the Civil War when Bolshevik control was basically reduced to central Russia; Soviet historians usually referred to it as Respublika v koltse frontov [Republic in the ring of fronts]. The poster’s designer was clearly influenced by this idiom, either directly or through the widely-distributed historic military map with the same caption that was published by the Commissriate of Defense in 1923.
