SALVADOR DALI HAND SIGNED COLORED WOOD ENGRAVING - 1960 - CREATED FOR DANTE'S "LA DIVINA COMMEDIA" - ARTIST'S PROOF - HAND SIGNED IN PENCIL BY DALI - NUMBERED IN THE LOWER LEFT CORNER "EA" IN PENCIL - RIVES PAPER - IMAGE 10" X 7" - FRAMED APPX 20"X16" - PROFESSIONALLY FRAMED - This woodcut is made by the process which is called engraving, because engraving tools are used to make a printing block on a polished slice of the trunk or branch of certain trees, cut across the grain. Because of the small size of the slices of wood, it is often necessary to combine several of the pieces to produce the full image. The image is not cut into the block; it is the unwanted portion that is cut away, and the lines to be printed are in relief. Only one color ink could be applied at a time, so each sheet had to go through the press as many times as there were colors. The shading of colors in the images is so subtle and so varied, that it is hard to believe they were made by carved blocks. One can appreciate the amount of precision and work that went into each of these woodcuts.
