    Edmund Darch Lewis 19th Century New Port Yacht Race Sailboats Watercolor & Gouache Seascape Painting Period Frame Signed and Dated 1880 1 of 2 in Sale

    Lewis, Edmund Darch (1835 - 1910), considered one of the most prolific and commercially successful American landscape painters of the late nineteenth century known for landscape and coastal marine painting in the Styles of the luminous Hudson River School realism, naturalist representation. Studied under Paul Weber.

    Watercolor and gouache on paperboard (with beveled gilt edge) 7” by 15 1/8”, depicting a yacht race off the coast of New Port, Rhode Island, signed and dated lower right with title verso to painting: Edmund D. Lewis 1880 (LR), district NW of Newport RI Yacht Race.
    Period wide 4 1/8” panel gilt frame with ebonized inner liner 14 7/8” by 23” by 3/4".

    These are exceptionally beautiful Lewis’s fresh from a local estate!
    Provenance: Florida gulf Coast Estate.

    Condition

    Paperboard has toned commensurate with age with some light foxing. Paperboard edge is beveled and gilded. Frame very good with moderate edge wear with noted separation to mitered inner ebonized liner.
