Harvey Littleton Prunted Form
Harvey K. Littleton (American, b. 1922), an abstract blown glass composition, name inscribed on underside and dated 1963; ht. 6 in., lg. 9.25 in.
Littleton is widely regarded as the father of the studio glass movement in America. He is a native of Corning, New York, where his father worked for Corning Glassworks. He began his artistic career as a ceramicist, but later became a highly influential glassblower and sculptor. In addition to his career as an artist, he was also a professor and Chairman of the Department of Art at the University of Wisconsin where he advocated for glass to be included in the arts curriculum. It was the first such program in the nation, and produced many influential glass artists, including Littleton's student Dale Chihuly. Littleton's objects can be found in the collections of many major museums in the United States, as well as museums in England, Germany, Switzerland, and Japan.
