(American 1836-1901) West New York, New Jersey. Landscape with deer on edge of river. 25" h. x 46" w. oil on canvas. Signed "A. Melrose" lower left. Andrew Melrose painted traditional atmospheric landscapes. Many of his paintings are views of New York state and New Jersey, especially regions of the Hudson River Valley and New York Harbor. His paintings are typically rendered in the romantic-realist style of the Hudson River School. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design from 1868 through 1883, and also exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association. Listed in Dawdy, Fieldings, Hughes, Samuels, Who Was Who in American Art, Davenports, etc. Relined in fine condition.
