Artist: JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932) Size: 31 7/8 x 46 1/8 in./81 x 117 cm Imp. Chaix, Paris Created in 1863 by Angelo Mariani, Vin Mariani is simply a combination of Bordeaux wine and coca leaves. The restored ‘health and vitality’ mentioned in this poster, as well as the model’s visual exuberance, is the result of the small amount of cocaine laced in the beverage -- an ingredient used by many popular drinks of that era, including Coca-Cola. Mariani was also one of the first publicists to recognized the value of celebrity endorsements, and succeeded in getting Thomas Edison, Queen Victoria, and two popes, as well as then-famous musicians, doctors, public figures, and comedians to praise the product in his many advertisements.
