Description
A MEISSEN PORCELAIN "SEA LIFE" CHESS SET, designed by Max Esser, 20th century, one side a coral colour, the other side grey and white, kings and queens as sea anemones, bishops as lobsters, knights as sea horses, rooks as octopi, pawns as starfish, the king 8cm high, the pawn 1.5cm high, with Meissen underglaze "crossed swords" mark in blue.
***Max Esser (1885-1943) was born in Pomerania, and studied at the Berlin Academy under August Gaul, before joining Meissen as a designer.
