Description

A-16 Adolf Hitler's proof copy of the large format pictorial "DEUTSCHLAND". Inside cover has Adolf Hitler's personal library bookplate. Sepia toned early type eagle/swastika, oak leaf branch, "EX LIBRIS" and "Adolf Hitler". 4 " x 3 1/2". Upper right corner of the flyleaf has Hitler's abbreviated signature and "Muster" (proof). The first two facing pages show a mass of Germans and Hitler, breaking ground with a shovel, between laborers - obviously symbolizing Hitler as the builder of a "New Germany". Views of farming, the construction of the autobahn, automobiles, building and modernizing of cities, expansion of industry shipbuilding, aviation (zeppelins), technology, social welfare, conservation, sports, culture, national service, honoring the military as well as the SA are all topics emphasized - as advancing because of the leadership of the NSDAP. Hitler has personally made 19 corrections and initialed all. Included are: the drawing of a swastika sun he added to one scenic view, an indication to enlarge a Nazi flag, another to unfurl a flag to make the swastika visible and to remove the cigarettes being smoked by two SA men. Besides trying to engrain the swastika on Germany's national emblem, Hitler's personal anti-smoking views were evident. The linen cover shows age and foxing, but does not affect the numerous photo pages. We believe that this particular proof of the book "DEUTSCHLAND" may be the only one in existence as we have never seen a second copy in this country or being offered in Europe. The above offering of the original Adolf Hitler library book was obtained by an American Major in Berlin, in May 1945. Heading the 713th MP Battalion, he and his French counterpart, Capt. V. Ziegelmeyer, had access to the Reichs Chancellory and were able to acquire books with Adolf Hitler bookplates, stationary and other material. Letterheads, from Capt. Zeigelmeyer's estate were offered in Mohawk Arms Auction Catalog No 38 on February 21, 1998 and books with "Adolf Hitler" bookplates were sold in Auction 61 on June 19-20, 2009, in Auction 62 on November 20-21, 2009, Auction 63 on June 4-5 2010, Auction 64 on November 19-20, 2010, Auction 65 on June 3-4, 2011, Auction 66 on November 18-19, 2011 and in Auction 67 on June 1-2, 2012.
