Avigdor Arikha was born in 1929 in Bukovina, Romania. Arikha drew his first portraits from life in childhood and continued in a Nazi labor camp from where he was rescued in 1944 and brought to Israel, to kibbutz Maaleh Hahamisha. He was severely wounded in Israel's War of Independence (January 1948).
In 1946-49 he studied art at the Bezalel School of Art in Jerusalem and in 1949-51 at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He later studied philosophy at the Sorbonne and art history.
In addition to his work as a painter, draughtsman and etcher, Arikha has written numerous articles, mostly on art history as well as scholarly catalogues for exhibitions he curated at the Louvre, the Israel Museum, the Frick Collection, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, among others. He also lectured on art in various academic institutions, gave talks on the radio and made a number of television films. He lives mostly in Paris.
Just as Arikha puts us in intimate, contemplative relationship with surfaces, he also puts us in intimate, contemplative relationship with scenes, seeming to bring his subjects up close to the viewers. He shows no cliché romanticism or nostalgia for the golden days of youth -- which weren't so golden for the Jewish artist. Instead, he offers a resourceful, respectful, fresh response to the life around him, even when considering inanimate things.
Arikha is a new old master, integrating the traditional idea of a picture with a modernist sensibility to produce what Delacroix called a "masterpiece": a work the sight of which "checks you in spite of yourself, captivates you in a contemplation to which nothing bids you except an invincible charm."
Arikha received several honorary awards such as the Gold Medal, Triennial in Milan (1954), Chevalier des Arts et Lettres in Paris (1978), Grand Prix des Arts de la Ville de Paris (1987), Prix des Arts des Lettres et des Sciences, Fondation du Judame francais in Paris (1989). He has honorary degrees from the National Academy of Fine Arts of China, Hangchow and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
Arikha had many one man shows around the world and his works are in renowned museum collections.
