1749 Massachusetts Military Commission for an Ensign WILLIAM SHIRLEY, British governor of Massachusetts from 1741 to 1759. Partly-printed Document Signed, “W Shirley.”, in brown ink, on an official document, 12.5” x 16”, of the “Province of the Massachusetts Bay”, Boston, MA, May 11, 1749, Choice Very Fine. Signed as “Captain-General and Governour in Chief”, the document is a military commossion appointing Nathan Walker an Ensign, in part: “...by His Majesty’s Royal Commission to Me... I do (by these Presents)... appoint you... Nathan Walker to be Ensign of the Second Foot Company of Militia in the Town of Dighton in the Second Regiment of the Militia in the County of Bristol whereof Samuel Willis Esq. is Colonel... Given under My Hand & Seal at Arms... the Eleventh Day of May... 1749”. Countersigned by various officials. Laid down on card stock, toned, some spotting; a very nice presentation. William Shirley (1694-1771) was Colonial Governor of Massachusetts Bay from 1741 to 1759, commanded American Forces in Britain’s conflict with France during the assault on Louisbourg and during the French & Indian War.
