C1917 WW1 Royal Flying Corps 'DOXA' DASHBOARD /COCKPIT WATCH.
A ''flight' type top wind nickel cased WW1 timepiece watch used by the Royal Flying Corps and installed into the wooden dashboard of many early aircraft. Matt Black dial with white non- luminous Arabic numbers , minute markers, signed '30 Hour Non Luminus Mark V' and ' B. E. 9663 ' within inset seconds dial at 6. Made by DOXA with a Swiss 30 hr movement. Reverse of case is marked with War Dept A ( for Aviation) and arrow. 2" in diameter RFC used this type of watch in 1916 & 1917 Case marked inside 'Metal Argentan' case no '1234952'
Note: The RFC pilot was responsible for the aircraft cockpit watch. The timepiece would be 'signed for' by the pilot priot to a mission, and returned thereafter. Watches were mounted to aircraft dashboard by a variety of different means. Original examples did not have loops to top but some were added later for personal use.
