Description
Hawai'i
Kou wood
9 x 18 x 20,5 cm
Provenance:
Queen Kapi'olani, Hawai'i
Inter-Island Steamship, Hawai'i
Dudley Child, Honolulu
Christopher B. Hemmeter, Honolulu
Sotheby's, Paris, African & Oceanic Art, 4 December 2008, lot 58
Property from a Princely collection
This spittoon belonged to Queen Kapi'olani (1834 - 1899). Called Ipu kuha or ipu'aina it was by far the most important wood container of chiefs and royalty. A special attendant cared for the bowl and constantly attended to his chief with it to collect food scraps, hair, or nail clippings. These were secretly disposed of to protect the chief against sorcery, and unsurprisingly the spittoon bearer was considered the most trusted and esteemed servant of the chief.
Spittoons are quite distinctive because of their unique shapes, in this case expressed through an elegantly balanced play of contrasts between the convex bottom and concave top part, where the median rim is prolonged by a small handle.
Ancient repairs on the base with breadfruit gum (kepau) and kepa.
