Item Details
Description
East Cape, North Island, New-Zealand
c.1850
Wood, fibers, 217 cm
With old collection's inventory number: 5139M

Provenance:
Jean-Paul Morin Collection
Pierre Bergé & Associés, 4 November 2011, lot 193
Property from a Princely collection

Intricately sculpted model of a Maori war canoe.
The bow consists of a defiant-looking Tiki head, and the hull is adorned by geometrical patterns and Tiki figures in relief. On the stern, we find a Tiki seated figure with full facial moko (tattoo) patterns engraved.
The style and extraordinary quality of the sculpture correspond to the Maori classic period, and should probably be dated around 1850.
Impressive in size and refined execution, this canoe model highlights both Maori boating culture and artistic prowess.
