Property from a Princely collection
Intricately sculpted model of a Maori war canoe.
The bow consists of a defiant-looking Tiki head, and the hull is adorned by geometrical patterns and Tiki figures in relief. On the stern, we find a Tiki seated figure with full facial moko (tattoo) patterns engraved.
The style and extraordinary quality of the sculpture correspond to the Maori classic period, and should probably be dated around 1850.
Impressive in size and refined execution, this canoe model highlights both Maori boating culture and artistic prowess.
