Item Details
Description
Designer & Manufacturer: Massimo Stanzione
Markings: marked
Country of Origin & Materials: Naples; oil on canvas, wood
Additional Information & Circa: "Amorino Dormiente (Sleeping Cupid)" by Massimo Stanzione (1586-1656). Inscribed (on the reverse) Il Cavaliere Massimo for Massimo Stanzione. The frame of extremely fine quality, with its beautiful gilding and forged-iron hanging hook, has never been altered and appears to be the original. Stanzione was one of the leading painters of Naples in the first half of the 17th century, eclipsed only by Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652) with respect to the prestige of his innumerable commissions. Many of Stanzione’s grand altarpieces remain in situ but his repertoire was prodigious in terms of its diversity and his portraits, mythologies, and depictions of religious subjects are dispersed worldwide. His art was strongly influenced by that of Caravaggio (in Naples 1606 and 1609/10) and, later, by the Bolognese who sojourned in Naples such as Guido Reni and Domenichino; he was a collaborator with Artemesia Gentileschi on more than one occasion. This lot was examined, researched, and described by Roger Ward, PhD. Roger Ward completed his MA and PhD degrees at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London. He is currently an adjunct curator and guest curator at several museums, a consultant for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for the repatriation and restitution of confiscated works of art, and an expert advisor. c. 1586-1656
Dimensions: 38.5"h, 50.5"w; 46"h, 58.25"w frame
Condition
This example appears never to have been cleaned: the old, discolored varnish layer is grimy. The paint surface is, nonetheless, remarkably well preserved with impasto in the clouds of the sky, for example. The unlined canvas is in remarkably good condition; a few small and scattered holes have been neatly patched on the reverse. The frame has never been altered and appears to be the original.
