Description
Abstraction with structured glass. 1930s. Vintage gelatin silver print on Agfa-Brovira paper. 39,5 x 30 cm. Photographer's stamp and number in pencil on the verso.
In 1929, along with twenty-three other photographers, Arvid Gutschow was part of the groundbreaking international travelling exhibition of the German Werkbund "Film und Foto" which began in Stuttgart. His images made their way into various journals and magazines of the 1920s and 1930s such as Der Querschnitt, Atlantis, Koralle, Das Deutsche Lichtbild and Photographie Arts et Métiers Graphiques.
Although recognized internationally as a photographer, after 1929 Gutschow's photos were rarely shown in museums and he was nearly forgotten. He has been referred to as "a pioneer of the New Vision of nature and landscape". The image offered here is typical of the period in Gutschow's work when he concentrated on form and structures such as dunes, sand, metal and patterns. – Corners minimally bumped, small pinholes in corners and side edges, traces of previous mounting on the verso, a few minimal handling marks, otherwise a large-format print in very good condition.
