Published by Editions Schellman & Klüser, Munich, Germany/New York. Printed by Rupert Jason Smith, New York, with embossed stamp on far right. Warhol created his own rendition of Botticelli's "Birth of Venus" as a part of a series intended to give a "Pop" twist to the icons of the Italian Renaissance, including the Botticelli masterpiece "Birth of Venus." Warhol created four different versions, as he did with the Marilyn, bestowing celebrity status on Venus, the Roman goddess of love. As with his Marilyn series, Warhol creates black, white, pink and yellow Venus images, bringing into question the ancient ideals of female beauty as they relate to beauty in this contemporary age of diversity.
