Description
War of 1812: Anti-British Indian Scalping Scene Cartoon. This 13" x 10" hand-colored engraved cartoon is titled: "A Scene on the Frontier As Practiced by the Humane British and Their Worthy Allies!" It shows two Indians in the process of scalping two dead American soldiers and claiming their reward money from a member of the British "secret service". Redcoats and Indians dance around a campfire. The bottom of the print has patriotic verse urging action on the part of Americans: "Arise Columbia's Sons and forward press/ Your Country's wrongs, call loudly for redress/ The savage Indian with his scalping knife/ Or tomahawk, may seek to take your life." It is signed "L.G." and was issued circa 1813. There are some internal tears and the entire item has been professionally backed with rice paper. A rare imprint, it must have been popular as several variations are known to exist.
