PIERRE-LOUIS FLOUQUET Rug, 1920s Wool 116 ⅛ x 93 ¾ in. (295 x 238 cm) Pierre-Louis Flouquet studied at the Beaux Art Academy in Brussels during World War I. In 1919, he shared his workshop with René Magritte and gained recognition for his works bridging Cubism and Futurism. Together with poet Pierre Bourgeois, architect Victor Bourgeois, painter Karel Maes and musician Georges Monnier, he founded a weekly revue called "7 Arts." In this revue the artists attempted to define a new abstract painting, called "Plastique Pure," which partly shaped the Belgian art scene of 1920s. Flouquet's theories easily translated from fine art to decorative art. In his work he wanted to explore the psychic, with a sublime approach to human drama, and try to reach this through abstract construction and the organization of colors, lines and rhythms.
