Description
Three Alphonse LaPaglia Signed Sterling Silver Tazzas. Stamped on bottom: International, Sterling, LaPaglia Designed, 118. Weighs 66.34 ozt
La Paglia was the iconic designer for Georg Jensen. Sicilian-born Alphonse LaPaglia was necessarily influenced by the historic arts of Southern Europe during his formative years. In the second quarter of the 20th century, when Danish Modern designers emerged as an aesthetic-altering creative force, LaPaglia's pieces reflected this new stimulus. During World War II, when the supply of Jensen wares from Copenhagen were cut off, LaPaglia created pieces for Georg Jensen U.S.A., in New York City, from his Summit, NJ studio.
La Paglia parted ways with Jensen some time in 1948-49 but carried on his own production. In 1952 he partnered with the International Silver Company and relocated his workshop to Meriden, CT. There he met Danish born Kurt Eric Christoffersen, also a designer for International Silver and the two formed the International Sterling Craft Associates, which produced a line of high-end Modernist jewelry and hollowware for the company. Tragically, Alphonse LaPaglia died less than a year later as a result of complications from a fall. International Silver acquired the design rights from LaPaglia's widow and production continued. Kurt Christoffersen carried on as director of the International Sterling Craft Associates until 1957.
