JAMES HOLLAND (BRITISH 18-1870), OIL ON CANVAS
JAMES HOLLAND (BRITISH 18-1870), OIL ON CANVAS
Item Details
Description
JAMES HOLLAND (BRITISH 1800-1870), OIL ON CANVAS, 14" X 21", ENGLISH TOWN FAIR WITH TENT:Signed "S.J. Holland" lower left; later gilt frame. Provenance: Daniel Rees, Fine Art, Jackson, MI and family owned ever since.
Condition
Excellent quality painting with good detail. As viewed under UV light in the unopened frame: blacklights clean except for a very small dab in the LL corner, a very little in the bottom left of center reclining male and the barrel to his right, a fleck of overpainting in the LR corner and a faint showing right along the very bottom edge and just clipping the very bottom of the initial 'J' in the signature (the scarification of the lip of a frame may have had something to do with this). However, the written conservation statement from 1983 on the verso says that it was touched up a little and varnished. There are 5 areas where the varnish seems to be removed when you look at the painting from the side (at an oblique angle): in the upper part of the tent pole - the c. 1 1/4" x 5/8" pink area and the bottom of the blue area, an oval area c. 3/8" x 3/8"; then the c. 2" x 1 1/4" whitish blob in the center far left; the blue skirt of the figure in the center far left (c. 1/4" x 1/4"); finally a very small area right in the very UL corner. All of those before mentioned areas do not fluoresce but are noticeable because of the lack of varnish over them and maybe are the areas of restoration mentioned in the written conservation report (?). Even if all the before mentioned items are overpainting, the total amount would only be c. 2-4%. Overall craquelure is stable; stretcher bar cracking of the paint developing along the upper portion of the painting; not lined or patched; gilt frame appears to be later in date and has only very slight 'wear".
